It is no secret that college education is the US very expensive. According to one report, colleges are raising tuition by an average of 3.6%, higher than the current rate of inflation, which stands at 2.2%. If we look at it mathematically, going to college is an investment of both time and money. Therefore, it is important to choose a college major that gives you a return on your investment. However, it is not an easy task. In order to shed light on which college majors pay you back, I have complied a list of top 5 majors by earning potential. The data was collected by Payscale. It is no surprise that all the college majors listed here are in STEM. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, STEM fields will create 1 million jobs by 2020. #5 Chemical Engineering
Salary: $70,300 - $124,500
Chemical engineers work on refining processes, and developing new and improved methods of production. Some chemical engineers specialize in a particular area, while others work in a generalized areas of food, energy, electronics, pharmaceutical and even clothing industries. Salary: $69,000 - $127,500
Nuclear engineers are responsible for research and development of processes that encompass all areas of nuclear energy. Their work can be in areas that are very diverse, ranging anywhere from the medical field to powerplants to spacecrafts and even to consulting firms.
#3 Actuarial Science
Salary: $61,200 - $130,800
Actuary scientists work in the fields of finance and accounting. Their primary role is to understand the risk of a transaction and develop methods that will help clients minimize the risk associated with that transaction. In their careers they rely on the principles from mathematics, statistics and finance.
#2 Actuarial Mathematics
Salary: $56,400 - $131,700
Similar to actuary scientists, actuary mathematicians find themselves at the intersection of finance and mathematics. Specifically, they probability to determine financial risk associated with an event. They are often employed by insurance companies or large banks who deal with underwriting and financial transactions.
#1 Petroleum Engineering
Salary: $94,600 - $175,500
Petroleum engineers work in the oil and gas industry.Their job lies in the interface of chemistry, geoscience and physics.
